The Full Blue Moon

Each year, the moon completes its final cycle about 11 days before the Earth finishes its orbit around the sun. These days add up, and every two and a half years or so, there is an extra full moon, called a Blue Moon. The origin of the term is uncertain, and its precise definition has changed over the years. The term is commonly used today to describe the second full moon of a calendar month, but it was originally the name given to the third full moon of a season containing four full moons..

In June‘s month, there was usually a very small window where tribes could plant and harvest strawberries, giving its full moon the name Strawberry Moon.
June’s full moon is sometimes referred to by Europeans as the Rose Moon, while other cultures named it the Hot Moon for the beginning of the summer heat.

The Full Pink Moon

This April full Moon heralded the appearance of the moss pink, or wild ground phlox (one of the first spring flowers). It is also known as the Sprouting Grass Moon, the Seed Moon, the Egg Moon, and the Fish Moon since it is also the time of year when fish would swim upstream to spawn. Historically, Native Americans living in what is now the northern and eastern United States kept track of the seasons by giving a distinctive name to each full Moon. With some variations, the same Moon names were used throughout the Algonquian tribes from New England to Lake Superior.

The Full Worm Moon

In March, the temperature typically started to warm up. The ground begins to thaw and earthworms begin to appear ; it’s easy to see how native Americans got the name for this full moon. It’s this time of year when the crows begin to appear as well, which is why another popular name for the March full moon is the full Crow Moon. This is also known as the Sap Moon, as it marks the time when maple sap begins to flow and the annual tapping of maple trees begins. To the European settlers, this moon was also known as the the Lenten Moon and was considered to be the last full moon of winter.

If you do not know Alan and Tina Cheesley yet, not only do they run a creative digital marketing strategy company in Bristol UK, they also organise events and fundraising for the Starfish Pool Appeal, in a very challenging way…

While Alan managed to cycle through The Alps in six days, Tina joined a team of mad people to take part in a one mile ice swim!

Their aim is to raise over £1 million pounds to build a new hydrotherapy pool at the secondary school site so that the disabled children who attend the school and other disabled children across Bristol can benefit from the amazing effects of swimming in a warm hydrotherapy pool.

Please support Tina’s challenge by giving generously, they are nearly there!
Go, Tina Go!
