The estrogen effect : how chemical pollution is threatening our survival

Altering Eden : the feminization of nature, by Deborah Cadbury

Altering Eden : the feminization of nature, by Deborah Cadbury.

The Book was first published January 1st 1997 under the original title: “Altering Eden : the feminization of nature”.

With the world population now exceeding six billion, it may seem strange that scientists are worried about threats to human fertility. Yet dramatic decreases in human sperm counts (a 50% decline since the 1940s) and soaring rates of testicular cancer suggest that there is cause for concern.

Science journalist Deborah Cadbury, here expanding her Emmy-winning Horizon program “Assault on the Male,” presents evidence that the widespread use of synthetic chemicals has disrupted our and other animals’ natural hormonal systems, in effect flooding them with megadoses of estrogen-like substances that “feminize” males and contribute to breast cancer and myriad other problems.

The list of suspect chemicals is alarming: DES, DDT, PCBs, plastics (used in everything from washing machines to dental sealants and food packaging), even birth-control pills. Traces of these substances have been detected in soil, water, wildlife and humans from around the globe, and have been implicated in such conditions as animal hermaphroditism, impaired sperm quality, microphallus, prostate cancer, endometriosis and even impaired intelligence.

How researchers began to recognize the problem and piece together its clues is a compelling and frightening story, which Cadbury tells with journalistic verve. Though she admits that a definite causal relationship between chemical exposure and reproductive abnormalities has not yet been proven, she finds the evidence compelling. This is a chilling account of industrialization’s adverse – and perhaps irreversible – effects.

Why is Gender Identity so Important?

Treat everyone with dignity and respect asks Rikki Arundel

This talk, published on 25 Feb 2015, was given at a TEDx event using the TEDx Talks conference format but independently organized by a local community.

  • Why is my Gender Identity so important? Think for a moment about how you might describe someone.
  • Now what if you didn’t know their
    gender?

    • How would that change your description?
    • How would it change their identity?

Rikki Arundel takes us on a journey into the world between genders to explore how we can break from the prison of gender identity.

More Information

  • In 2002, after a life long struggle with her gender identity, Rikki Arundel decided to change her gender, a decision that brought her successful speaking career in financial services technology to an abrupt halt. Faced with considerable discrimination, she changed her field of expertise, completing a masters degree in Gender Research at Hull University and establishing herself as a diversity expert. She has spent the past decade delivering transgender awareness and other gender related training to mostly public sector organisations, and developing her website: GenderShift.

As a male, I was prenatally exposed to medically prescribed hormones…

Real Talk with The Cummings and Hugh Easton, 2016

Video published on 12 Apr 2016 by REALTALK W/The Cummings channel with DES Son Hugh Easton.

Can a drug manipulate gender identity?

Listen to what Hugh Easton has to say. We know many DES sons who can confirm that yes, it did happen.

” Among my first discoveries were that I have a type of body structure that’s usually associated with intersex conditions, and that I have symptoms of acute hypogonadism. Basically, my body doesn’t make enough testosterone. Then, I came across a passage in the book “Brain Sex”, about a pattern of very shy, socially withdrawn behaviour that was often seen in teenaged boys who’d been prenatally exposed to an artificial estrogen called DES. It was virtually a perfect match for my own teenage years.

Shortly after that, I joined an online group of DES sons. It was like walking into a disaster zone, with everyone in the group appearing to suffer from health problems of various kinds, including hypogonadism, and various intersex-related abnormalities. One of the first things I noticed was that it was supposed to be a group for DES sons, yet most of the people posting stuff were using women’s names! I later discovered that these people had actually been assigned male at birth… “

Sex is not genetically determined via X & Y chromosomes

Sex redefined

Sex can be much more complicated than it at first seems. According to the simple scenario, the presence or absence of a Y chromosome is what counts: with it, you are male, and without it, you are female. But doctors have long known that some people straddle the boundary – their sex chromosomes say one thing, but their gonads (ovaries or testes) or sexual anatomy say another. Parents of children with these kinds of conditions – known as intersex conditions, or differences or disorders of sex development (DSDs) – often face difficult decisions about whether to bring up their child as a boy or a girl. Some researchers now say that as many as 1 person in 100 has some form of DSD.

Claire Ainsworth, Sex redefined, nature, 18 February 2015.

Today the SRY gene is understood as one among the many essential mammalian sex-determining factors that are involved in the genetic pathways of both testicular and ovarian determination. Mammals require cascades of gene product in proper dosages and at precise times to produce functioning male and female gonads, and researchers recognize a variety of healthy sexual phenotypes and sex determination pathways in humans.

Sarah Richardson, Sex Itself, University of Chicago Press.

In fact, the sex you develop as isn’t directly genetically determined at all, but instead depends on the action of gonadal hormones during the critical period when your prenatal development is taking place. All the X and Y chromosomes do is determine whether you develop testicles or ovaries, it’s the hormones produced by those organs that actually determine whether you develop as male or female.

Unfortunately, most doctors and pharmaceutical industry decision makers also subscribe to the myth that sex is genetically determined, which is why they’ve not appreciated the dangers of giving hormones to pregnant women, and why we’ve ended up in a situation we’re in today (where large numbers of people have been born who’ve undergone partial or complete opposite-sexed brain development, as a result of being exposed to hormone-disrupting drugs such as DES – find out more about DES studies on gender identity).

Hugh Easton, DES Son.

Sex isn’t chromosomes: the story of a century of misconceptions about X & Y, newstatesman, 23 FEBRUARY 2015. Chromosomes by C. Smith.

The influence of the XX/XY model of chromosomal sex has been profound over the last century, but it’s founded on faulty premises and responsible for encouraging reductive, essentialist thinking. While the scientific world has moved on, its popular appeal remains.

EDCS: Are Boys turning into Girls because of Man-made Chemicals?

Endocrine Disruptors: Boys turning into Girls…

” Recently we are seeing accelerated puberty in young girls, alarming increase in the men with extremely low sperm counts and transgender phenomenon growing at alarming pace.

Endocrinologist have found out that endocrine disruptor found in man made common chemicals like DES, dioxin, PCBs, DDT , plasticizers and in many more chemical we use daily are responsible for this unusual phenomenon.

Endocrine disruptors gets locked in to your fatty tissues and they can not be excreted out of our bodies as they are insoluble in water and they get accumulated during our entire life time. Endocrine disrupting chemicals disturbs the endocrine glands that releases hormones into the bloodstream to control various organs of the body. The endocrine glands includes the pituitary, thyroid, adrenal, thymus, pancreas, ovaries, and testicles. Developing fetuses and infants are are more vulnerable to endocrine disruptors.

In 50s and 60s doctor prescribed a synthetic estrogen called diethylstilbestrol (DES) to pregnant women with the goal to prevent miscarriages which was later found to contain endocrine disruptors. Over five million women were effected by this drug. Miscarriages, spontaneous abortions, premature births ,birth defects of the the uterus, ovaries, immune system defects, undescended testicles, malformed sperm in boys, chronic depression and other psychiatric disorders were reported. Use of estrogen have caused breast cancer in some women. With not much of government control over this chemical manufacturer let us follow simple precaution to save our next generation:

  • Educate yourself, your family and friends about endocrine disruptors.
  • Use organic pesticides and fertilizers.
  • Do not give young children soft plastic teether or toys.
  • Buy organic food whenever possible.
  • Do not store fatty foods or water in plastic containers.
  • Use glass article were ever possible.
  • It is better to use natural estrogen replacement for men who require hormone replacement therapy. “

Gender-related Disorders resulting from DES Exposure in Males

PRENATAL EXPOSURE TO DIETHYLSTILBESTROL IN MALES AND GENDER-RELATED DISORDERS: RESULTS FROM A 5-YEAR STUDY

Important research on DES exposure in males.

For many years, researchers and public health specialists have been assessing the human health impact of prenatal exposure to the estrogenic anti-miscarriage drug, diethylstilbestrol (commonly known as DES or “stilbestrol”). The scope of adverse effects in females exposed to DES (often called “DES daughters“) has been more substantially documented than the effects in males (“DES sons“).

This paper contributes three areas of important research on DES exposure in males:

  1. an overview of published literature discussing the confirmed and suspected adverse effects of prenatal exposure in DES sons;
  2. preliminary results from a 5-year online study of DES sons involving 500 individuals with confirmed (60% of sample) and suspected prenatal DES exposure;
  3. documentation of the presence of gender identity disorders and male-to-female transsexualism reported by more than 100 participants in the study.
